Ensemble Nonlinear is a new electronic performance ensemble for students at Rensselaer. Using a wide-array of audio and visual technologies, students create new musical works for the ensemble and perform them live in concert performance.
The class is open to both undergraduates and graduate students for either 1, 3 or 4 credits. Students enrolling for 3 (graduate) or 4 (undergraduate) credits will explore new technological means to compose interactive musical works for the ensemble to perform. Students taking the class for 1-credit will only be required to rehearse and perform in the ensemble.
All students will learn topics related to musical composition and performance, software design and development, computer networking, sound design and synthesis and human-computer interaction such as:
- New Interfaces for Musical Expression
- Network/Telematic performance
- Generative and Algorithmic Music
- Virtual Musical Instruments
- Live Coding
